Lewis James is a photographer originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, now based in Brooklyn, New York. He started exploring the medium of photography over seven years ago and only started to pursue it seriously after moving to New York to study photography at Pratt Institute three years ago. His work follows the practice of expanded documentary. This allows him to retell stories following the history of documentary photography, while simultaneously incorporating more conceptual photographs to expand upon the narrative and artistic intention.
Outside of photography, Lewis also works a lot with the medium of the book. Lewis has recently become the co-founder of Lunar Press publishing company, an independent publishing company dedicated to producing artist books with an emphasis on photography. Alongside collaborator Emily Liu, he used the medium of the artist book to help convey different stories and narratives.
