J. Amir Robinson - Scholars - The Gordon Parks Foundation

Amir Robinson is a young photographer from Montgomery, Alabama. Starting at an early age, Amir was drawn to the Arts. He explored music and visual arts before choosing to attend Booker T. Washington Magnet Arts High School, where he studied photography. For the past four years, Amir has passionately pursued photography, acknowledging his gift for expressing his ideas with artistic compositions. Next year, Amir plans to attend Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. Some of his awards and recognitions include 2022 Nominee for U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, 2 Regional Gold Keys awards in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition, as well as numerous state and regional awards for his artwork.

Amir's current body of work is inspired by classical and iconic masterpieces found in Art History. He used his inspiration, as well as his own creativity, to reconstruct and modernize these pieces. For example, in Concealed, he uses a traditional three-quarter length portrait of a draped male, however his face is covered to obscure his identity. The representation of the black male in the role of the classic idealized form brings attention to racial identity and human value. He also explores color through the use of vibrant Pop Art values and geometric shapes. Through his Art, Amir wants to reinterpret works from Art History to be more inclusive and offer racial equality.
