While working for Standard Oil, Parks traveled extensively through New England chronicling small-town life. His photographs preserve a record of the United States as it was entering the postwar period, and at the same time reveal his evolving style. The images highlight his talent for candid portraits and depictions of community gatherings, as well as a new technique: impressionistic, tightly squared views of vernacular country buildings and elegantly framed compositions with fence posts, tombstones, and open doorways, that convey a single point of view plainly and directly.
