Ethiopian fashion model and advocate for maternal, newborn and child health, Liya Kebede is a supermodel and mother who was featured on the cover of American Vogue for the second time in May 2005, with the headline “Cover Model With a Cause.” Her Liya Kebede Foundation helps reduce mother and child mortality through work with governmental and non-governmental organizations. The Foundation aims to increase awareness and visibility of cost-effective, evidence-based interventions which are extremely effective in improving the health and survival of mothers and children. Liya’s children’s clothing line, Lemlem, features products hand-woven in Ethiopia that are intended to help build the Ethiopian manufacturing industry, inspire economic independence, and preserve the art of weaving.
