Karan was born into fashion on Long Island, her father a custom tailor, her mother a showroom model. Following her second year at Parson’s School of Design, Karan was hired by Anne Klein. After three years as associate designer, Karan was named successor following Klein’s death in 1974. The first Donna Karan New York Collection was launched in 1985, followed by the street-inspired DKNY in 1989. The labels grew to include beauty, hosiery and home collections, as well as the additions of DKNY Men, DKNY Jeans, and DKNY Kids. With social causes a heartfelt priority, Karan spearheaded Seventh on Sale benefits with the CFDA to raise funds for AIDS awareness and education. Karan also co-chairs several benefits and founded Urban Zen Initiative to create a working structure for advancing wellness, preserving culture, and empowering children.
